Bonaparte First Nation – Log Home Renovation

Bonaparte First Nation’s Log Home Renovation at Loon Creek Hatchery is a strong example of how existing spaces can be transformed into safe, supportive housing that meets real community needs. Rather than building from scratch, the Nation is revitalizing an existing log home and turning it into a three-bedroom transitional housing unit for members who need stability, safety, and connection.

The renovation is comprehensive. It includes structural repairs, roofing, mechanical and electrical upgrades, HVAC, insulation, and full interior finishing. This level of work ensures the home is not only safe and functional, but built to last. Once complete, it will be a fully independent, self-contained home that can be occupied without relying on other infrastructure at the site.

What makes this project especially meaningful is its focus on trauma-informed and Secwepemc cultural design. The space is being shaped to support healing and comfort, recognizing that housing plays a key role in well-being. This is particularly important for families, Elders, youth, and women who may be leaving unsafe situations and need a place that feels secure and supportive.

The project is delivered under Chief and Council oversight, with a focus on local Indigenous employment. This creates opportunities for community members to be directly involved in the work, building skills and contributing to a project that will benefit their own people.

Located at Loon Creek Hatchery near Cache Creek, the home is owned through a Nation entity, reinforcing local control and long-term stewardship. With a detailed assessment and cost estimate already completed, the project is well-positioned to move forward with URN Capital funding through FNHIC.

At its core, this renovation is about more than upgrading a building. It’s about creating a place where people can feel safe, rebuild, and move forward. By combining strong infrastructure, cultural design, and community leadership, Bonaparte First Nation is turning an existing space into a meaningful housing solution that supports both immediate needs and long-term well-being.
